Wednesday, 1/2/13:
Objective: In small groups, we will plan and present book talks. We will cite specific examples from our texts to determine central themes and story elements within the text. We will practice our language, speaking, and listening skills during our presentations.
Homework: Read for 30 minutes. The type of reading material is your choice. Choose something that interests you! Have a discussion with your parent(s) or guardian about what you read. In your discussion, practice using our active reading strategies: Visualize, Predict, Connect, Clarify, Question, Evaluate.
Thursday, 1/3/13:
Objective: We will complete our book talk presentations. We will define the different types of irony and analyze how irony and foreshadowing are used to create suspense.
Homework: Write a short, suspenseful scene for a murder/mystery screenplay. Remember, in dramatic scripts the plot unfolds through the characters' dialogue and actions, rather than a narrator's commentary. Incorporate specific stage directions to help your readers visualize what is happening.
Here are some ideas if you are having trouble....
1. A lone woman enters a dark house. Her hair is matted with rain and she frantically feels for the light switch. When she flips the switch, nothing happens....
2. A small group of children are playing near an old abandoned farm. One of the boys hears a muffled cry coming from the barn.
Friday, 1/4/14:
Objective: We will begin our short story rotations. We will complete graphic organizers as we read to analyze how different elements of a story impact each other. We will use active reading strategies in small-group discussions to ensure comprehension of the texts.
Homework: Start studying your new vocabulary words. In class, you will get a list of your words and the required vocabulary activities. The activities will be due next Friday, 2/11.
