Week of 1/28 - 2/1
Get ready to become absorbed in Flowers for Algernon! We will begin the story on Monday. Students will have the opportunity to either read the short story version or the full novel during the week. We will pair the story with nonfiction articles about IQ, multiple intelligences, and developments in human enhancement. Students will compare the story with video clips from "Charly", the movie version.
Monday: Complete anticipation guide, begin reading IQ article, and begin reading FFA. Focus will be centered on how authors "show" us character traits through the use of dialect in a text.
Homework: Work on book project. Continue working on vocabulary activities for Unit 3. Begin reading article of the week, "Human Enhancement and the Means of Achieving It." Make notes for each paragraph in the margins and highlight words you don't know or things you find interesting.
Tuesday: We will do a Rorschach activity, continue reading FFA, and analyze instances of direct/indirect characterization
Homework: Work on book project. Continue working on vocabulary activities for unit 3. Continue reading article of the week.
Wednesday: Find common themes between selected poems and FFA. Continue reading story.
Homework: Work on book project. Continue working on vocabulary activities for unit 3. Continue reading and annotating article of the week.
Thursday: Rat race activity. Use higher order thinking question stems to create questions which will deepen one's understanding of the text. Continue reading story.
Homework: Work on book project. Finish Vocabulary activities for unit 3. Finish reading and annotating article of the week.
Friday: We will take our VOCABULARY TEST. We will have a class discussion regarding our article of the week and our anticipation guides. Students will complete FFA.
Homework: Begin new vocabulary unit. Find a news article about a technological invention or study that will significantly affect human lives.
