Week of 1/14 - 1/18

Hello parents and students! We are continuing our science fiction unit with some interesting, thought-provoking short stories and videos. Students are analyzing the literary elements within each story and creating text-to-world and text-to-self connections. Their ultimate goal this week is to answer the question, "What if...." This question will allow them to look into the future and start problem-solving issues that may occur in their generation.

Monday
Objective: We will determine themes within our science fiction readings and viewings. We will compare works within the science fiction genre.
Classwork:
Team Discovery: Viewing of Twilight Zone, "Back There" by Rod Serling
Team Endeavour: "Examination Day" by Henry Slesar, "Lose Now, Pay Later" by Carol Farley
Team Atlantis: "Future Tense" by Robert Lipsyte and "The Fun They Had" by Isaac Asimov
Challenge Reading: "The Ruum" by Arthur Porges
Homework: Work on vocabulary unit activities. Select book for book project and read.

Tuesday
Objective: We will analyze how an author's background/era influences his/her craft.
Team Discovery: "Future Tense" by Robert Lipsyte and "The Fun They Had" by Isaac Asimov
Team Endeavour: Viewing of Twilight Zone, "Back There" by Rod Serling
Team Atlantis: "Examination Day" by Henry Slesar, "Lose Now, Pay Later" by Carol Farley
Homework: Work on vocabulary unit activities. Read book project book.

Wednesday
Objective: We will compare the ways our different science fiction authors build suspense in their works.
Team Discovery: "Examination Day" by Henry Slesar, "Lose Now, Pay Later" by Carol Farley
Team Endeavour: "Future Tense" by Robert Lipsyte and "The Fun They Had" by Isaac Asimov
Team Atlantis: Viewing of Twilight Zone, "Back There" by Rod Serling
Homework: Complete all vocabulary unit activities. Read book project book.

Thursday
Objective: We will view "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and evaluate choices made by the director. We will compare to the "Back There" Twilight Zone film.
Delayed opening
Viewing and whole class discussion of "The Day the Earth Stood Still"
Homework: Study vocabulary words. Read book project book.

Friday
Objective: We will demonstrate our knowledge of Greek/Latin roots by scoring at least 80% on our vocabulary test.
BRING YOUR BOOK PROJECT BOOK TO CLASS!
Vocabulary test for Hum/Hom/Homo root words
Independent Reading - Ms. Grinnell will meet with students individually to discuss book project book picks.
Homework: Begin new vocabulary unit. Read book project book.
